This is the reversed version of the lullaby I posted here – and I’ve aptly named it, Remembering October, as it sounds like memories being traced backward through time. I honestly really love this one, more so than the original!

Practical and Ritual Correlations Between Cooking & the Craft

I’ve always noted the similarities between “cooking” and the
Craft – both evolutionary and practically. In other words, I don’t just keep
my rituals in a recipe book for no reason, because rituals – for the most part –
are in fact recipes. That’s not a new concept, but one adapted by many folds of
the Craft. It is also one I haven’t seen thoroughly discussed here (and that might
well be my fault for not. looking hard enough, admittedly). As such, I thought
I might as well write a short explanation of the symbolic equivalence of the
two.

In essence, when broken down, cooking and magic can be
explained as the act of: combining items in such a way that they might be
transformed into something grander than their individual constituents. Many
things in nature can be described as so (specifically chemistry, which cooking
is a form of), but I’ll just stick to cooking – as it is something everyone can
understand to some extent or another. To perform this action and render wanted
results, there are things that must be accounted for.

Ingredients

Without a doubt, these serve the most important aspect of
both cooking and the Craft. Let it be noted that I am a traditionalist, and as
such, believe plants have as unique an energetic fingerprint as they do a
flavor. There is no such thing as substitution. Two “Love” plants are no more interchangeable
than two “spicy” herbs. They may well render similar results, but they are not
and will never be wholly interchangeable. I’ve read a few posts recently wherein
New Agers were attacking traditionalists for saying that there were no
available substitutions. The New Agers were angry – saying that the
traditionalist believed that: “You just think people with lesser means shouldn’t
be practicing!” That accusation was so off-base I nearly spat out my tea.

I vehemently stand with the other Traditionalist in question
in that, he/she is right. Not everything can be just replaced all willy-nilly
and be expected to render the same results. You wouldn’t rightly expect an
onion and a clove of garlic to render the same flavor profile (even though they’re
in the same family), so how on earth could you expect to replace one with the
other to meet the same end? What you were asking was for something that would compromise
the integrity of the given ritual – something I, myself, would also refuse. The
audacity one must have to come to a witch and demand that they give you a cheaper
substitute that brings the same results is astounding. That isn’t to say
witchcraft cannot be performed economically, but you can’t simply demand
cheaper options to an already composed ritual and expect the same results. It’s
as foolish as it is naïve. I, personally, am very understanding when it comes
to the spectrum of financial means in the community and would always be open to
– not offering cheaper substitutes for an existing ritual – but offering an
entirely new ritual with more
economical ingredients. However, if someone were as rude to me as these
particular New Agers were being, I would not only have not done this – but may
well have found it fitting to rain down a maelstrom of hellfire on them.

I digress, however, to ingredients. They are important and they
serve a practical purpose. These needn’t always be plants, obviously, as
ingredients can extent to curios, powders, oils, seeds, etc. And while I think
I’ve covered substitution, I have not
yet covered omission.

In all honesty, I believe I’d omit long before I’d substitute
– especially in the case of accessory ingredients – which some spells have and
others don’t. In that regard, it’s very much about knowing the correspondences
of your herbs. These will not always align from craft to craft – just as
identical spices are used in conjunction with other spices that produce unique
profiles from culture to culture. They may taste the same (though that isn’t
always the case: Mexican Oregano, for example, has a much different taste than
the usual oregano with which most are familiar), the other ingredients present
can amplify, detract or transform the flavor into something entirely different.
A big part of this is that cultures cook with (and use ceremonially), those
that grow in their area – for the obvious reason that they’re there. While we
live in a modern age where most herbs and spices can be gotten year round and
from all over the world, such was not the case until maybe 30 years ago. As such, there are pros and cons with this.
Pros extend to the fact that we have a much wider range of available
ingredients, ones that can be documented and reproduced much more efficiently
in the craft. Conversely, depending on locale, some of these can be very
expensive to obtain – and, additionally, we shirk off the herbs that grow
commonly in our area. I am very much an advocate for collecting, drying and
using the herbs present in your location – it connects you to your specific
location’s flora, it allows for the opportunity to expand your knowledges by
having to familiarize yourself with and identify the herbs and plants common to
your area (especially those that are unique and not sold commercially), and –
for the most part – it’s free! Witches have been collecting and identifying for
as long as we have been – it would
seem a shame to stop it now, just because buying them can be easier. We live in a modern world, I know, but if things had
not been broken for millennia, I highly doubt they need any fixing now. It’s a
lot easier to keep something alive than try to resuscitate it later.

Pot/Pan/Vessel

Symbolically, the pot/pan exists as a microcosm – the place
wherein your ingredients might be combined, and from them, wrought the new.
This could be your circle, work space, even your hands. In cooking, it serves
to contain and control the working – and the same can be said for the magical
element. This is where you control and augment the energies in combination, to
bring forth the results you desire – but the pot is a place that is
energetically neutral – a place that is conductive to the “heat” that cooking
requires, which brings us to:

The Stove/Fire

This is wherein your influence resides. This is the catalyst
point, wherein energy might be funnel through you into your working – “cooking”
the ingredients. Of course, this isn’t the only place wherein your influence as
the “chef” might be noted, as you must tend the whole process – the process
that first begins with your desire. You cannot cook if you do not first turn up
the heat! (Unless we’re making a ceviche or something, and I don’t think we are…)

Electricity/Gas/Wood

This is the element few think about when drawing comparisons
to cooking and the Craft – but while we (witches) exist as the heat, this heat
is not born from nothing (see the Law of Conservation of Energy, if you don’t
believe me) – this heat is born from underlying energy. And what this energy is
depends heavily on the witch performing. Some choose to draw from Deities, Nature
(not personified), the Sun, Moon, Cosmos, specific locations, even Self. It is
this energy – that exists at its rawest state that makes the Craft possible. It
doesn’t depend where you draw from,
only that you do – for without it, all other steps would be wasted. Without
this energy, there would be no heat. Without heat, the pan would not conduct,
the food would not cook and the whole process would be futile. You could call
this Faith – but that is not always correct, as witches and their energetic
influences are as varying as possible cooking ingredients. It isn’t about what
the chosen source is, though, it’s about choosing one and using it! Find your
source, and after that, the rest is cake.

As I’m sure you all know, the list of cooking implements
seems to expand almost infinitely, much like instruments in the Craft. For
this, however, I’ve stick to the most basic elements as I can: ones
unspecialized and easily relatable, and hopefully have helped some in
understanding the correlations between cooking and Crafting so that, perhaps,
they might gain a further understanding of their own process.

The Conquered Heart Oil

Touched on briefly here, I thought an actual recipe was in
order – as, while the basics were accounted for, the numerous optional
additives could not be covered in a brief foot note. As such, I bring to you
the full recipe – including a number of particular specialization ingredients.

This oil has an innate duality. Foremost it is a love oil –
but one that might not be the most healthy, depending on its application. It is
used to conquer the heart of another, which is an idea in itself that has a
number of connotations, each of which the oil is (or may be) uniquely suited
for. The oil has the potential to control the heart of another in whichever way
the witch sees fit – making them fall for a specific purpose, such as a
traditional love oil, or to reign over the heart of another with an iron fist
in a similar manner to Bend Over Oil. These two acts as the poles of a spectrum
– for it covers both, and all in-between.

The Basic Ingredients:

  • Castor : Carrier Blend – 1 : 4 ratio
  • 1 – 3 Red Roses*
  • 1 – 3 Iron Nails*
  • Sulfur
  • (3) Red Chiles, dried

LOVE: Specialized Options

  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Anise
  • Orris Root
  • Poppy Seeds

CONTROL: Specialized Options

  • Calamus Root
  • Licorice
  • Devil’s Shoe Strings
  • Black Locust Thorns

To create, simply fill an empty bottle – dark, red or amber
glass being preferable, but not necessary – with the chosen additions (with
the exception of the “*” ingredients) from above.

Depending on the size of your bath, remove the petals from
the rose(s), one by one and impaling them on the iron nail(s). Continue until
the nail is full or you run out of petals. Toss any excess petals into the
bottle with the dry ingredients and place therein the constructed curio. Warm
the oil mixture (only warm – you do not want to deep fry the herbs, just coax
out their natural properties) and pour over the contents of the bottle. Shake
frequently for 7 days, at which point it is ready for use.

I saw your post on the water trance, I was wondering if you had made or will make one on fire?

I haven’t made one yet – I was awaiting the request and here it is!

Flying With Fire: A(nother) Hedgeriding Tutorial

image

There are a few separate ways to utilize fire in trance-work and hedgeriding – and is probably the oldest method thereof, considering the human adoration and reliance on fire – it is the flame that allowed us to be as we are, for cooking allowed us to reallocate metabolic energy from fighting infectious agents in the gut to the formation of a more advanced brain. As such, fire is particularly suited symbolically to act as a medium for trance-work.

The basic principle is the same and is (theoretically) a relatively simple process, as with most trance magic – however, as I’m sure most know, there is more to trance magic than simple methodology. Yes, some are naturally predisposed to astral travel and edgewalking, but for those who aren’t, crossing over can be a very trying process that demands patience. The process cannot be forced or rushed – for it demands respect and humility.

The utilization of fire begins with – not surprisingly – fire. The size is unimportant, though a bonfire is traditional. Other alternatives being candles, lanterns, torches and small, contained fires (such as one in a durable bowl or cauldron). For the latter, I recommend using Sacred Fire – as it has been created for such divine purposes and its use in edgewalking can potentially strengthen the process. Unlike water, however, fire comes with a stricter time-limitation. While it can be a stronger medium, it must too come with its limitations: when the fire is extinguished, the trip is over. So don’t dally.

Fire is also more hazardous, obviously, which can prove to be another limitation. If you lack confidence in your fire-making and tending skills, I would recommend an alternative – because the worry of causing a conflagration will act antithetically to your ability to travel unencumbered.

Once your fire has been fashioned, your choice thereof will determine how best to proceed:

  • Bonfire: Obviously the most traditional, the methodology surrounding can take a few turns depending on your own preferences. For those who find movement beneficial to trance, dancing around the fire can be very productive. To do so, one must release all inhibitions – letting go of thoughts regarding the dance and simply allowing the music to take you. Trance is very much about mindlessly occupying the physical so that the mind and spirit might wander. Allow your body to absently be carried with the music – and then, you might free your mind and spirit from its confines. For those less inclined to movement, I also recommend music – specifically drums. There are few things that go so well together as drums and fire – the instruments of man. Lay at a short distance from the fire – far enough to be away from any cascading embers, but close enough to still feel its warmth. Position yourself with the top of your head pointed in the fire’s direction, allow the light to dance against your closed eyelids. Allow the drums to enthrall you and pull from you your spirit. It is most important not to dwell on forcing yourself to leave your body. This is counterintuitive. It’s about letting go – something that cannot be forced. If you grapple with discouragement, you are not yet ready for hedgeriding.
  • Lanterns/Torches: These are used in a more physical manner – and something that is more so reserved to mediums than those who do not possess the Sight. For this method, you will need a torch or lantern and an open space – woods, fields, and deserts are all perfectly good options. This method relies not on severing the mind and spirit from the body, but bringing the chosen realm to the physical – the torch or lantern acting as a guide or beacon. To perform, simply light the lantern and cite your purpose – which plane do you wish to observe, what is it that you seek, etc. Take a few moments to prepare, a few deep breaths, then hold the lantern/torch high and walk. Allow your eyes to unfocus so that it is only blurry warm, fire-light perceived. Do not look at the lantern, it is the lantern light that is important – not the actual flame. Walk until you begin to “see” into the Otherworld through the mind. Once you have broken through, to traverse the plane you need only will it to be. Think of the person, place or thing you seek and allow it to come to you as you walk onward. Once you have found what you seek, allow yourself to snap back to this plane and extinguish the torch or lantern. If for any instance the torch or lantern goes out, do not relight it: instead leave and try again on a different day.
  • Candles/Small Fires: This is undoubtedly the most accessible fashion and the one most often discussed. In this instance, it is exactly opposite to the torch/lantern method, in that the flame is the most crucial element. It’s simple – merely look at the flame, allowing your eyes to unfocus so all that you see is the dancing of the flame. It is at which point that you must turn introspective (and for me it feels quite literal, as though my eyes are drawn from their sockets and into my “Third Eye.” The vision circles in my brain before piercing outward from whence it entered – it is then that the traveling begins. In much the same fashion as above, you need only will it to find the person/place/thing you seek – allowing it to come to you, not vice versa. I think that’s what makes hedgeriding experiences so frustrating to people – they believe that it must be this journey first to get where you need to be – when in reality, you need only allow the place to come to you. Do not let the limitations of this plane (such as time and space) limit you in the others.

Hopefully that was of some help! Fire is one of my favorite elements as it lends itself so nicely to my airy essence – we feed one another and feed off one another in such a symbiotic way – as such I very much enjoy utilizing it in all manner of spellwork. Considering your request for it, I’m sure you feel much the same way and I hope this might help you find what it is you seek!

Recollection Gris Gris

This was a recent working I performed for a friend who sought to remember his memories from the distant past. He wished to remember very specific situations, but as I told the witch who requested this post, it can be used more generally to return flashes of memories from previous lives – once the flashes come, they can be explored and recollected in great detail – just as all other memories. This will act as the spark that sets memory in motion.

You’ll Need:

  • Sulphur
  • Salt
  • Graveyard Dirt
  • Sacred Fire
  • Chalk/Paint
  • Black Fabric (cut into a 6×6 in. or 8×8 in. square)

On the fabric, draw or paint this sigil
(ignoring the bottom, accessory sigil – as it is specific to the original
working):

In the “circle”
that surrounds the eye, pour enough sulphur to cover, patting and rounding it
to match the shape of the oval. Over the sulphur pour a heaping pinch of salt to the center. This will serve as the “bed” for the graveyard dirt – which should be correctly collected and paid for at the Gates. Take roughly a
quarter-sized clod and place it in the center – this will serve as the heart of the matter, the Dead, the Past, etc. Place the assemblage on a
fire-safe, flat dish and with a dropper or other precision implement, lightly
and carefully saturate the dirt with the Sacred Fire and light – this is the spark, the fire returned to Death in such a way that life may recall what has been lost to time, to the Earth.

As it burns, read the following incantation –
that is presented phonetically, for ease (alternately, this can be read with its burial):

SAH-rem SAH-tem

TORE-in la-TOCK

SAH-resh she-AH-lem

Mar-TAY-nyuh la-ROSH

VEN-ga – VEN-ga

See-AH-tem

Gather the corners and tie into a bag. Bury in
a the cemetery from whence the dirt came – near the same spot if possible.

Would anyone be interested in a sort of coalition for pro bono witchcraft based on specialities?? I love offering assistance to fellow witches and those in need – and am capable of all areas, but I have my undeniable preferences:

So, I was wondering if anyone would be interested.

The idea being – either starting a separate blog or opening my submissions to requests and, based on the type of ritual needed (love, finances, etc.) I’ll just forward it to whomever’s specialty that is.

I personally prefer works regarding love and the Dead – spirit work and necromancy.

Not to mention, if we could build a large enough expert base, we could have numerous specialists in the same category and help many more people – which is what I’ve always been about.

If anyone is interested, let me know!
