The Witches’ Baptism

Or – perhaps more fittingly – the Witches’ Rites of
Renunciation are meant to sever the religious ties of your own personal past.
This is done (I have found) for two distinct reasons: to shed the preconceptions
forced by organized religion, including both the doctrines and the antithetic
notion of hierarchal power in regards to Enlightenment, and as a symbol of
rebirth. Much like a baptism! Only in this instance, the sin you wash away is
the sin of religious indoctrination, hypocrisy and the very human realities
that accompany the notion of “church.” It is meant to be a freeing exercise –
one that cleanses all the malformed ideologies imbued on you throughout your
earlier life. Of course, that is easier said than done and no one ritual can
truly clear the slate completely, but it serves as a formal boundary between
the past and the future – a future in which you must relearn your understanding
of the world at large. One in which the answers presented are not set in stone,
but fluid – from which you must come to your own conclusions, test your own
theories and tessellate the scattered mythos and ideas into a cohesive faith –
you own faith, reliant wholly on none other than yourself.

That is The Witches’ Baptism, and this is one example of how
it may be performed:

Ideally, the rite should be done at a Crossroad
(of whichever type speaks to you the most) as it is a transformative ritual! Bring
with you whatever you need to light a fire in your preferred method – such as
wood for a classic bonfire, Sacred Fire to light in a bowl/cauldron/vessel, or
alcohol – which can be poured in a circle (note: isopropyl alcohol isn’t fond
of the cold or wind, so either plan according to weather or bring a backup
solution).

On site, when you are emotionally prepared, build your fire.
Depending on your chosen medium, your window of opportunity will differ greatly
(the above are listed from greatest to least burn-time), so factor this in as
well. For those of you who thoroughly enjoy taking your time, I recommend
building a true fire.

The following part should be personalized to fit your taste,
as how you wish to release the past is up to you. You can do it simply, by
speaking out loud that you rebuke the religion of your youth/past (traditionally,
this is done by rebuking the Holy Spirit of Christianity – the unforgivable
blasphemy – so as to free oneself from its vice-grip, though the renunciation
can extend to any religion [or even no religion]). As an example:

I, [name], child of [father’s name] and [mother’s name],
Reared in the faith of [“Our Lord,” “Yahweh,” “Allah,” etc.]
– rebuke these laws;
No longer am I bound by tomes or cathedral walls,
Nor do I kneel at the altar of man –
But I walk the crooked path – proud,
For I was born in the Earth –
In the Heart of the Tempest;
And so I have become;
From whence I came – so I return.

A few other options consist of writing these things out – in
as long-winded or concise a manner as you wish (these can even be written days
in advance) – or burning a symbol of the past. The flames are freeing – allow them
to be.

Purge these broken things from the mind and heart, and cast
them symbolically into the consuming fire of creation and destruction. It is
these things that stand as obstacle – let them be cleansed from you. And when
the time has come, when these things have been expressed and used as kindling
(carefully) leap the fire (and try not to wear any hairspray!). Then you are
free.

Upon the other side, you may douse the fire, allow it to
burn out, or use this time to connect with another Spirit or Deity (I said you were free, not that you had to stay free!), Nature at large, or even
with yourself – whichever is most befitting your chosen path. Theoretically,
this could be done by an Abrahamic witch if only to cleanse the effects of church
indoctrination – for those who wish to follow the gospels/tomes in a unique or
personal way.

And for those who wish to follow the Traditional Witch path
(the “origin” of the Witches’ Baptism), this would be the perfect instance to Evoke
the Devil
!

Door Bar Boundary

The last few years, I have, admittedly, become more and more
reclusive. I want to say that my patience for the stupidity of other humans is
greatly at fault, but I’m sure it’s not the only reason. Regardless, being the
hermit I am, my home is a place that must serve as a retreat and safe-house
from the world at large. While many wards, charms, sigils and the like are
meant to keep people and entities out, I haven’t found many that employ the addition
that I do: to keep negativity In general out.

I’ve had days where I’ll feel sluggish and downright
crotchety and then, upon crossing the threshold into my house, feel instantly
better. No doubt a result of my spelled door – one intended to keep all things negative
from entering, including the negativity saddled onto the spirit or the psyche.
In a sense, it’s almost a form of healing!

To create this barrier, I use seals in conjunction with
brick dust, cascarilla and my own Door-Bar
Oil
(which should hopefully be made available in my shop soon!). I
recommend something that at least incorporates barberry – which is the main
ingredient in my own formula.

As for the seals, I use the above, drawn in chalk on the inside of the doorframe.

You could also read an incantation of you creation if it
suits you.

Note: The boundary should be set up, then followed by a
cleansing of the house to force any negativity within outward – the boundary
then prevents any energetic “backwash,” if you would. Cleanse house as needed
of any confined negativity, and reset border annually or as the markings fade.

I’m sorry, but I’ve always had a particular fondness for Tesla – this article is wonderful, but undoubtedly my favorite part is that this is achieved through the use of oscillation and – if you know anything about the Edison vs. Tesla, (DC vs. AC, respectively) – you’ll know that oscillation is an important facet of AC current given the use of Tesla’s patented induction motor. It is one of the reasons we remember Tesla’s name, as well as what paved the way for his rise to fame.

Day Drivers are the bane of my existence. Yes.

“Let’s make complete stops to turn.”
“Turn signals? What are those?”
“The sign says 55, but it’s sunny and mild, so I better play it safe and drive 37.”
“Look at these cute dotted lines, I wonder if I’m supposed to weave between them.”

Give me the drunks and the truckers any say.

Cigarettes & Witchcraft

I feel like I’m morally obliged to condemn smoking – what with
the weird unicorn commercials and whatnot trying to deter teen smoking.
However, I find them far more horrifying than the prospect of smoking, so I don’t
know what their aim is. I digress – the uses of cigarettes in the craft are
many. This is a guide to how I use cigarettes in my craft, to be adapted by my
fellow smokers out there however you see fit.

Offerings

Many entities (especially those of the Afro-Caribbean – and some
Native American, I understand – faiths) accept cigarettes, cigars and varying
tobacco products as offerings. In this regard, it is best to follow tradition
or intuition. Some Spirits/Deities are particular – favoring cigars over
cigarettes, vice versa, or other smoking methods such as pipes – and which you
should use is reliant on what you know of the spirit in question or what you feel the spirit will enjoy. Another
handy note, I think is that other herbs can easily be added to cigarettes
(already rolled or otherwise) to render and lovely aromatic or flavorful blend.
I, particularly, have a fondness for blending rose, cinnamon and cocoa with the
loosened tobacco and then packing it back into the tube. They’re lovely to
smoke, but also make great offerings (I’ve found) to Pomba Gira. It’s very much
a matter of taste – both personal and that of the spirit.

Personal Affects

Many spells call for something belonging to your intended
target – cigarette butts are particularly suited to such, as they must be
discarded after use, already imbued with the thoughts (and saliva) of he/she
smoking it. Simply lift the butt from an ashtray at your convenience and voila!
Personal affect. And with bodily fluid, nonetheless! One of the strongest
personal affects and easily the most difficult to ascertain.

Intention

This is what I use cigarettes for most often – a means by
which to channel my intention into a physical medium. It’s merely a matter of
lighting the cigarette and using the smoke to charge something. Admittedly, I
very rarely use incantations in my practice, but when I do, rest assured there
is always a cigarette hanging on my lips. Every part of the cigarette can be
used, nonetheless! The smoke is exhaled as an expression of your will and might
charge an object or diffuse into the air. The ashes might be collected and
added to any number of powders or herb blends or oils. The butts make nice
additions to things like witches bottles – especially in great numbers as the
tar will set up into this disgusting, gelatinous ooze (most probably what my
lungs look like: best not to think about it too much). I usually use them for
chanting or mantras as well, as I simply continue repeating the phrase or
mantra until I run out of smoke.

Trance Work

This brings us back to something I mentioned in the first
point, that smokes can be personalized – and while no longer technically a “cigarette”
they are quite effective for things like trance work or influencing your own
energy. Needless to say, I advise refraining from adding poisonous herbs to
your blends… considering. However, I have been known to smoke wormwood, though
I wouldn’t classify it as poisonous, per se… Obviously, check the rap sheet of
any herb before ingestion/inhalation. And then do so at your own accord –
though I can say, I’ve never had any unpleasant side effects. Wormwood, mugwort
and mullein are my personal favorites for spirit work. Rose, cocoa and cinnamon
for works with PG or just for my own enjoyment – in fact, cocoa and tobacco
have a long history
together
. Of course, we could also talk about marijuana – which can be
added, though I’ve never been particularly invested. It does nothing spiritual
for me, but I understand it does for some, so more power to you – it might be
helpful for trance work, but I just use an ordinary cigarette for that most
times. WARNING: While in trance, don’t
forget to ash, otherwise you’ll come out wearing an entire cigarette. Trust me.
I know.

In loving memory of your lungs,

As promised – an update to the store. Powders have been added and are now for sale! Oils are in progress (mostly waiting on these cute, little bottles to arrive)!

Currently Listed:

Prosperity Blend

This is what I use to stuff my Prosperity Bundles – but as noted, the blend can also be tossed into a hearth or fire, scattered upon your property or hung in a sachet over your door to reap the same reward. It is to attract health, wealth and happiness into your life.

Mourner’s Dust

A powder intended to cause great grief and sadness. Not all powders are made of rainbows and butterflies, you know! This one is particularly nasty as it doesn’t inflict any circumstance or event that might breed sadness, but just causes them that overwhelming, consuming weight of melancholy to eat away at them. Best scattered on the victim’s doorstep, foo-tracks/trail or on something that belongs to them.

Fiery Lust Powder

*pictured above* As you can probably surmise, this little number has one job for which its well-suited: invoking that scintillating, carnal lust. It stokes the flames of even the hardest… hearts…. And not only does it get them going, it keeps them dancing. Toss a bit in the sheets. on his/her feet, or on yourself – depending on your end game – and let the passions run wild.

Hot-Foot Powder

This traditional recipe is one that is tried and true, and one that could just as easily be called (pardon my French) “Get the Fuck Away From Me” Powder. Use to drive someone away from you, away from town, or away from one another. This nefarious little concoction has been driving wedges for 100+ years.

Love Dust

Ah yes, love: a magic of its own, one that makes the sun shine brighter and the stars sparkle… when you got it. When you don’t? Love Dust. It can draw them in and hook ‘em, too. Keep them faithful, keep them tasteful and keep them as sweet as sugar. Sprinkle a little in your shoe to draw someone to you, a little in their wake if you know who you seek, or a little in the bed-sheets to keep the one you’ve got from straying – good alternative to a “spiked coffee,” if you know what I’m saying.

& (last but not least…)

Goofer Dust

About as classic as you can get – but you know what they say, “if it ain’t broke…” Everyone has their own, but this is my recipe and I’ve been using it with great success for years. Perfect for crossin’ and laying tricks on any enemy, Goofer Dust is nothing to trifle with. If devastation is what you want, you came to the right place.
